Spiced Beef Kebabs with Plums
Plum sauce, available in Asian foods sections of most supermarkets, combines plums cooked with sugar, vinegar, ginger and spices until thick. Straight out of the bottle, it makes a good barbecue sauce, but enhanced, as it is below, it makes a much better one. If unavailable, try a mixture of 2 tablespoons plum jam and 1 teaspoon soy sauce.
  • 2 large carrots, cut into 1-inch lengths
  • 2 tablespoons plum sauce
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 teaspoons oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 pound beef top round, cut into 3/4-inch cubes
  • 1 red onion, cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 1 large red bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 plums, cut into 1-inch wedges

1. In large pot of boiling water, cook carrots until crisp-tender, about 4 minutes. Drain and rinse under cold water.

2. In large bowl, stir together plum sauce, garlic, oregano, salt, sugar, allspice, ginger, and black pepper. Add beef to sauce and toss to coat. Add onion, bell pepper, and plums to bowl, and stir to coat.

3. Preheat broiler or prepare grill. Alternating ingredients, thread meat, vegetables, and plums onto eight 12-inch skewers. Broil or grill about 5 inches from the heat, turning skewers over midway, for 8 minutes, or until meat is browned and medium-rare.
