Vitamins for Pregnancy (U.K.)
High doses of vitamins C and E may help prevent preeclampsia, a potentially serious complication of pregnancy, note researchers at St. Thomas' Hospital in London. In the study, 283 pregnant women at risk for this complication, which produces a sudden rise in blood pressure, were given either daily doses of vitamins C (1,000 mg) and E (400 IU) or a placebo. Preeclampsia occurred in 17% of the placebo-takers but in only 8% of those taking the vitamins. (Lancet, 9/4/99)
