Vitamin Protection for Urban Athletes (the Netherlands)
Like to work out? The antioxidant vitamins C and E may be a good bet, especially in areas with poor air quality. Dutch researchers examined the effects of relatively low levels of the pollutant ozone on 38 cyclists who trained outdoors for three months. Lung function was stronger in athletes who took 500 mg vitamin C and 150 IU vitamin E daily than in those who received a placebo. (American Journal of Epidemiology, 2/15/99)
