Sleep Soundly, Age Gracefully
Poor sleep may take a greater toll than just afternoon grogginess: It may actually hasten aging, a new study suggests. Investigators at the University of Chicago disrupted the sleep of 11 healthy young men over the span of 16 nights. Being deprived of sleep produced various hormonal and metabolic disruptions that could over time jeopardize health. In fact, the sleep debt caused physical changes similar to those that take place as we age. The researchers also concluded that the often recommended eight hours of sleep a night might not actually be enough for most young adults. (Lancet, 10/99)
