Selenium and Hepatitis (Taiwan)
People infected with hepatitis B or C who have low blood levels of the mineral selenium are at greater risk for liver cancer, according to researchers at National Taiwan University in Taipei. A five-year study of more than 7,000 chronic hepatitis carriers found that selenium levels were significantly lower in those who developed liver cancer than in controls. The investigators suggest that supplementation with selenium and other nutrients might help prevent liver cancer in this population. (American Journal of Epidemiology, Aug. 1999)
