Finding a Doctor You Can Trust

It is very important to find a doctor you trust; especially one you can talk with openly, not just about alternative and complementary therapies, but about work, relationships, family, sex, and other concerns. The better your doctor knows you the more likely you'll receive appropriate advice on what's making you ill and what steps to take to get better. Take the time to shop around if you're not happy with your present doctor. Ask friends and health-care providers for recommendations. The organizations below may also be useful in helping you find a compatible doctor.

American Holistic Medical Association, One Eagle Valley Court, Suite 201, Broadview Heights, OH 44147. The AHMA includes M.D.'s, D.O.'s (doctors of osteopathy), and other licensed practitioners who practice integrative care. A city-by-city "doctor finder" is available on the Web at: www.holisticmedicine.org. Their contact information is as follows: Phone: (440) 838-1010; Fax: (440) 838-3627; Email: info@holisticmedicine.org

American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, 4435 Wisconson Ave NW, Suite 403 Washington DC 20016. Doctors of naturopathy (N.D.'s) function like general practitioner M.D.'s, with an emphasis on complementary therapies. But it's essential to check an N.D.'s credentials. Only in those states where naturopathy is licensed must an N.D. go through intensive medical training at an accredited naturopathic school. In unlicensed states, buyer beware: Anyone with a mail-order N.D. degree can hang out a shingle. The AANP practitioner referral line at (202) 237-8150 (www.naturopathic.org) is a good place to find an accredited N.D. who has met rigorous educational requirements. You can also contact them via fax at (202) 237-8152 or email at member.services@naturopathic.org.

The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture, 4929 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 428, Los Angeles, CA 90010; (323) 937-5514 (www.medicalacupuncture.org). Consists of M.D.'s and D.O.'s with 200 hours of acupuncture training. Their contact email is: administrator@medicalacupuncture.org.
