DASH Diet Looks Like a Winner
Duke University researchers report that the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet--rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products and low in saturated fat and cholesterol--can lower blood pressure quickly even when there is no change in salt intake or weight, suggesting it may be an effective alternative to drugs for mild hypertension. After 11 weeks, the DASH diet decreased systolic blood pressure by 11.4 points in people with hypertension and 3.4 points in those with normal pressure.
