A New Leaf for Diabetes Care
People with type 1 diabetes may one day be able to put their insulin syringes aside and take a pill instead. Scientists at Merck Labs in Rahway, New Jersey, are studying a compound called L-783,281. Derived from a leaf fungus from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the substance significantly lowered blood sugar levels in type 1 diabetic mice. The development of a pill that is safe and effective for humans, however, is likely years away.
