Recent studies indicate that dark chocolate contains substances called catechins (substances also found in both green and black tea). Noted for their potent antioxidant properties, catechins are a group of polyphenol phytochemicals in the flavonoid family. The four major types of catechins are epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC), and gallocatechin (GC). Catechins' antioxidant properties are currently under investigation for their use in protecting against cancer, heart disease, and microbial infection.
