Like many people who take Prozac, I find that it interferes with my sex drive. Are there any natural supplements that might help my problem?

Naturopathic physician Donald Brown, N.D., co-author of Drug Interactions with Vitamins and Herbs (Prima Publishing, 1999), suggests that the herb ginkgo biloba may be worth a try because it helps to boost blood flow in many parts of the body. "Using ginkgo together with an antidepressant may reduce the sexual side effects that some people experience with those medications," he says. "In studies, ginkgo has not interfered with the action of antidepressants." He points out that ginkgo may be particularly effective for those taking the antidepressant drugs known as SSRIs, including Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil. For improving sexual function, most experts recommend a dose of 80 mg three times a day. Look for preparations that are standardized to contain at least 24% flavone glycosides and 6% terpene lactones--the active ingredients in the herb that are thought to be responsible for its circulation-boosting effects.
