Thin Sow Syndrome (U.K.)
The clamor for lean meat and selective breeding has led to a problem that sounds like an oxymoron--anorexic pigs. A researcher at the University of Wales has identified pigs, typically young females, that don't eat enough to maintain their weight. Studies of these pigs should shed light on possible genetic causes of anorexia and lead to better therapies. (Nutrition, July-August/99)
