Calcium and Magnesium for PMS (U.S./U.K.)
Daily calcium supplementation may help relieve depression, mood swings, headaches, irritability, and other PMS-related symptoms. In a study of almost 500 women suffering from moderate to severe PMS, two 750 mg tablets of calcium carbonate twice a day for three months reduced overall severity of symptoms by 50%, compared with only 30% for those taking a placebo. (American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 8/98)

A smaller study of 40 women from the University of Reading in the U.K. found that those suffering from PMS-related symptoms of fluid retention (bloating, weight gain, swollen arms, breast tenderness) might benefit from 200 mg of magnesium oxide daily. After two menstrual cycles, those taking magnesium had a significant reduction of symptoms compared with those taking a placebo. (Journal of Women's Health, 11/98)
