Vegan Diet for Diabetes
A small study by the Physicians' Committee for Responsible Medicine (Preventive Medicine, 8/99) suggests a low-fat vegan diet of whole grains, vegetables, legumes, and fruits may greatly improve blood sugar control. Patients with type 2 diabetes who followed the vegan diet for 12 weeks saw their blood sugar levels drop an average of 28%, compared with only 12% in those following a standard low-fat diet. The vegan dieters also lost nearly double the weight, and some were able to lower, even eliminate, their need for diabetes drugs.
