Patchouli for Nausea (Japan)
A recent study of eight Chinese herbs used to assuage nausea found the essential oil in patchouli to be most effective for this purpose. Patchouli prevented vomiting 58% better than other oils in animal studies. It seems to counteract a chemical in the digestive tract that causes the muscles associated with vomiting to contract. The herb is popularly known in the West as a fragrance but has been traditionally used in Asia for its medicinal properties. (Phytomedicine, May 1999)
